Winnipeg
Jets won three World Hockey Association (WHA) championships during the seven
years the league operated. The first title came in 1975-76, the fourth year for the WHA. The team finished the regular season at the top of the Canadian Division with a record of 52-27-2 for 106 points. Houston Aeros of the Western Division also had 106 points. In the playoffs, Jets swept Edmonton Oilers 4-0 in the quarter-finals and beat Calgary Cowboys 4-1 in the semi-finals. In
the final, Jets beat Houston four straight winning 4-3, 5-4, 6-3 and 9-1
to deny Houston a third straight championship.
Winnipeg lost a seven-game final to Quebec Nordiques the next season, but the Jets were back on top again in 1977-78. During the regular season, the team finished first overall with a record of 50-28-2 and set a league record by winning 15 consecutive games from Jan. 28 to Mar. 1. In the playoffs, Jets beat Birmingham Bulls four games to one and then swept New England Whalers four straight to capture the Avco World Trophy. Another highlight that season took place at the Winnipeg Arena on Jan. 5, 1978, when the Jets beat the Soviet national team 5-3 to become the first club team from either the NHL or WHA to do so.
Winnipeg once again won the Avco World Trophy in 1978-79, the final year of the WHA. During the regular season, Jets finished third in the six-team league with a record of 39-35-6. In the semi-finals, Jets eliminated the second-place defending champion Quebec Nordiques four games to none while first–place Edmonton Oilers needed seven games to oust New England Whalers. Winnipeg won the first two games of the final in Edmonton and the teams split the next two in Winnipeg. Oilers won game five at home 10-2, but the Jets captured their third title in four years with a 7-3 win in game six at the Winnipeg Arena. The following season saw the Jets join the Nordiques, Whalers and Oilers in an NHL merger, but those who saw the glory days of the WHA will never forget them.
