1937-38 St. Boniface Seals Hockey Team
Few hockey teams have gone from the bottom of the mountain to the top as quickly as the 1937-38 St. Boniface Seals. The team did not even exist before 1934, when it was formed and placed into the B Division of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The initiation costs were high. By the end of their first season, the Seals had won one game. Three years later at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Seals had become the Number 1 junior team in the country after beating the Oshawa Generals 7-1 in the Dominion Junior Hockey Final for the Memorial Cup. Led by future four-time Stanley Cup winner, defenceman Wally Stanowski, it capped a year of destiny for the former doormats of the MJHL.
When the playoffs began, that storybook season, rightwinger Herm Gruhn set the tone with seven goals in a two-game blowout of the Winnipegs, 7-2 and 9-2. In the North Division final, the Brandon Wheat Kings had a two-games-to-one advantage in the best-of-five series, but St. Boniface won 5-2 and 4-3 to advance to the league final against the defending National Champs, the Winnipeg Monarchs. After stealing a 4-4 tie in a 90-minute first game with a goal from George Gordon with just seven seconds left in the first overtime, the Seals took the momentum to win 7-5 and 4-3 in the next two outings. The next round against the Thunder Bay champs from Port Arthur did not last long, though both wins were by a single goal. In the Western Canadian final for the Abbott Cup, St. Boniface started with lopsided wins of 7-3 and 8-3 and eventually prevailed three games to one.
In the Canadian final for the Memorial Cup, Oshawa won two of the first three games, but St. Boniface came back late in Game 4 - (five goals in the last eight minutes, including captain Bert Janke’s winner) -- to erase a 3-1 deficit, and forced a deciding game. In that contest, Gruhn, Billy Reay, and Herb Burron scored two each and the 7-1 final touched off the celebration. The Seals later changed their name to the St. Boniface Saints at the start of World War II.
