It was a case of love on the links. Back when Anne Tachan was in her early 20’s, she took a job at Elmhurst Golf and Country Club waiting tables and cooking. But things got steamier outside the kitchen when she met club pro, Joe Tachan. The two fell in love, married in 1950 and lived for a while at the pro’s residence on the course.
Tachan had golfed for fun with fellow staff, but along with her marriage came free tutoring from her husband. “I knew nothing about golf. I wondered why people played it,” she said, recalling her early days at Elmhurst. With Joe’s lessons, Anne became more interested in the game and decided to play tournament golf when she could break 100. She did that - again and again.
At the national level, Tachan won the Canadian amateur net trophy in 1958 and the Canadian amateur low net trophy in 1961. She was a member of the Canadian amateur championship team in 1962 with Merlene Netterfield, Marg Homenuik and Heather Lawrence, and took home the Canadian amateur team net trophy in 1965.
Locally, she has been on 25 provincial teams (National Amateur Championship 1957-67 consecutively, and 1969 and the National Senior Championship 1971-82 consecutively and 1984-85). She was a 10-time Manitoba senior women’s champion, won the City and District title once and won the Elmhurst club championship 14 times. She registered four holes-in-one over her illustrious career, on four different golf courses. Husband Joe died in 1989, but Anne Tachan was golfing three to four times a week, breaking 90 the “odd time” well into the next century.
