Kaye Minions discovered the beauty of her sport early in her long and successful career. For thirty years, there was no place else like a lawn bowls green in the world for her.
Minions began her lawn bowling career in 1960 at St. James Lawn Bowling Club. She entered the provincial singles competition the following year, won the gold and so it began. She was the first to win the Canadian Ladies Singles Championship in 1972, successfully defended her title the following year and competed in the World Bowls Competition in South Africa in 1972-73. Between 1972 and 1986, she won nine provincial titles in singles, pairs or triples. She represented Manitoba at the Canadians nearly every year in that span and won five medals at the national level. In 1976, Minions held both the provincial and American titles and went to the nationals. In 1975 and 1976 she won two American pairs titles as well as winning the North Florida All-Stars in 1979.
Minions’s involvement in bowls did not stop on the playing green as she achieved her national umpire’s badge in 1980, coaching certificate in 1981 and coaching instructor for Manitoba in 1987. In 1981 and 1982, she was the national umpire for the Canadian Bowls Championship and for the World Bowls in Toronto in 1981.
While she played between 1961-1987, Minions held every office on the board of the Manitoba Lawn Bowling Association excluding finance and secretary. She was the president of the St. James Lawn Bowling Club from 1986-88. She helped launch the first indoor bowls club in Canada in Winnipeg’s Sam Southern Arena.
Kaye Minions had three children with her first husband, Drew Lauder. Two sons, Rick and Allen, and a daughter, Gini, provided her with the greatest joy of her days. She married Bunny Minion in 1978, who shared her zest for life and love of bowls.
