GLADWYN SCOTT
Builder/All Round
Inducted 1992

GLADWYN SCOTTIn the late 40’s, when the McConnell senior baseball team took to a field that no longer exists, Gladwyn and brother Glennis would take turns pitching to their father. The boys’ mother kept score.

Today, the young man that played catch with his father is being inducted as an all-round builder for his contribution to both education and sport in Manitoba. In one year (1957) he played senior hockey on a team that won the league title, coached two high school basketball teams, a minor hockey team, three baseball teams and played senior baseball. In total, he coached seven provincial championship teams in a five year stint at Hamiota - highlighted by three titles in one season. Everywhere he has been in Manitoba, he left a foundation for sport. When Scott moved to Carman in 1960’s, he founded the Carman Cougarettes high school basketball team, Carman Goldeyes baseball team, and Carman Beavers senior hockey team. In 1962, he helped establish the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association.

Scott coached baseball teams for 38 straight years, from 1953 to 1990. He was assistant coach of the first ever Canadian National Baseball Team. During a three-year stint as general manager of the National Youth team, Scott’s club finished third in 1987. While Scott served as vice-president of Baseball Canada for three years in the mid-80’s, he never strayed far from the small town leagues. In 1983, he coached the Interlake Knights to the national tournament in Windsor, Ont.

He has been at the helm of countless leagues - from the Interlake Baseball League to the Southwest Manitoba Hockey League. Scott served as president of both the Manitoba Baseball Association and the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association. He served as a scout for the American League Toronto Blue Jays.
