Steve Trojack was born in Winnipeg. Although he played football as a teenager, Trojack was introduced to boxing after he watched the city’s top professional fighters train at an open air ring near Stafford Street and Grant Avenue. After sparring with Angus Snyder, Trojack joined the One Big Union Athletic Club and in 1929 began a boxing career that spanned five decades.

In one of his first matches, Trojack defeated Tommy Ormonde, a former Scottish champion, and won the Manitoba Heavyweight championship soon afterwards. Trojack was recognized among Canada’s best heavyweights throughout the 1930’s as he compiled a record of 40 wins (28 knockouts), 2 losses (both by decision), and 2 draws. His victory against George Manley in Manley’s hometown of Denver, Colorado, was Trojack’s finest ring performance. Manley had recently defeated world light-heavyweight champion Max Rosenbloom in a non-title bout and Trojack won a lopsided decision which was inspirational to his career.

Trojack was perhaps best remembered for two boxing exhibitions against Jack Dempsey, the former heavyweight champion of the world. After the “Manassa Mauler” had lost to Gene Tunney in the infamous “Long Count” of 1927, Dempsey launched a tour of exhibitions in 1931 as part of his return to boxing. Trojack went two rounds against Dempsey in Winnipeg and four rounds at a later date in Regina, Saskatchewan. Trojack remembered that Dempsey was very serious about a comeback and although there was no decision, he recalled being rocked by a left hook thrown by Dempsey.

Steve Trojack quit boxing in 1936 due to a broken hand but continued his participation in the sport as a boxing coach. As well, he officiated over one hundred bouts in all categories. Trojack was later appointed to the Manitoba Boxing and Wrestling Commission and was inducted to the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1979.
