KAS VIDRUKBrian MacLaren, a Phys. Ed. teacher at Murdoch MacKay, has had a career in track and field that has taken him to the top rung of success and the pinnacle of pride.

From 1961-67, MacLaren won numerous provincial championships in the 100 yard, 220 yard, 4 x 100 yard relay, 880 yard, 200 m and 400 m races. These performances were achieved at Bison- Jaycee meets, Provincial High School championships and Manitoba Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) championships.

MacLaren represented Canada in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City and on the National team tour of Europe in the 4 x 400 relay. He repeated in the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany, running both as an individual and as a member of the 4 x 400 m team. 1967 saw MacLaren at the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg as a Silver medalist in the 4 x 400 m relay, and Bronze medalist in the 800 m, as well as Bronze medalist in the 800 m in the Americas vs. Europe Meet and the 4 x 400 m relay at the British and Commonwealth Games. In 1964 he was a Silver medalist in the 400 m and a member of the Canadian National team on the European Tour.

He received the highly coveted Free Ride Scholarship at North Dakota State University, then onwards. At NDSU, MacLaren achieved “Little All America” status and was North Central Conference Champion in the 440, the 880, mile and the 4 x 440 relay. In 1967 he accepted a graduate assistance from Southern Illinois University and graduated with a Masters Degree in Phys. Ed. in 1968.

Brian MacLaren continued to give back to the sport he loved, serving as President of the Suburban High Schools Athletic Association and the MHSAA. He also served as a board member of the Canadian School Sports Federation (1981-84). The two-time Olympian was one of the few Manitobans to hold this prestigious role.
