ELIZABETH APPLEBY-LEVIN
Athlete/Speed Skating
Inducted 1986

ELIZABETH APPLEBY-LEVIN When Elizabeth Levin (nee Appleby) began skating with the Winnipeg Speed Skating Club at the age of four and then the River Heights Speed Skating Club one year later, she did not expect the sport would take her so far.

In sixteen years of skating, Levin won many local, provincial, and Canadian titles but the crowning glory was her triumph in the Junior World Championship at Madonna di Campiglio, Italy in January of 1976. Her times were as follows: 44:65 in the 500 metres for fourth place, 2:19:48 in the 1500 metres for second place, 1:29:34 in the 1000 metres for second place, and 4:58:15 in the 3000 metres for second place. In February of 1976, Levin was named to the Canadian Winter Olympic team and skated in three of four events in Innsbruck, Austria. She finished 22nd in the 1000 metres, 21st in the 1500 metres, and 18th in the 3000 metres. She was then named to the world all-round championship team in Gjovik, Norway where she placed nineteenth. The next three years, Levin reigned as the Canadian women’s senior champion. Some of her achievements included:

- Junior champion in the 10,000 Lakes Meet in Minneapolis, Minnesota USA in 1973; the first Canadian to do so in many years.
- Also named to the world sprint on all-round teams. Finished 27th in world sprints in Goteborg, Sweden and 25th in world all-round championship in Assen, Holland.
- One of two females named to the world junior team in 1976. She won the world junior championship that year, set the world sammelag record, and competed on the Canadian Winter Olympic team. That year she was also named to the world all around championship team where she placed 19th.

In addition to skating, Levin excelled in softball and cycling. Her other athletic interests included downhill skiing, water skiing, windsurfing, swimming, and golf.
