ALFRED WURR
Athlete/Wrestling
Inducted 1982

ALFRED WURRAlfred Wurr completed his public schooling in Germany and then immigrated to Canada where he settled in Winnipeg in 1961. Wurr quickly asserted his mastery in the sport of wrestling when he won his first provincial championship in 1963, and he continued to claim the title for fifteen consecutive years through to 1978. Wurr’s provincial success was enhanced by his achievements at the national level. These included eleven Canadian championships in freestyle wrestling as well as eight national greco-roman wrestling championships from 1965 to 1972.

On the international sports scene, Wurr represented Canada at the 1970 World Championships in Edmonton and the British Empire Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. At the latter games, Wurr placed second in the freestyle 163 lb. class and brought home a silver medal. Wurr continued international competition into 1971 when he wrestled for Canada at the Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia, and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany.

Alfred Wurr received many honours during his competitive career. He was the Amateur Athletic Union Male Athlete of the Year in 1964 and won the J.H. Roe Memorial Trophy as the Y.M.C.A.’s Athlete of the Year in 1964 and 1965. He was one of only two people to win this award in two consecutive years. In 1968, Wurr was also honoured as Manitoba’s Athlete of the Year and in 1980 was inducted into the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame.
