THE 1926 WINNIPEG TOILERS Basketball Team
Team/Basketball
Inducted 1982

VINCE LEAH The 1926 Winnipeg Toilers Basketball Team was the first of ten Manitoba Senior Men's teams to win the Canadian Senior Men’s Basketball Championships. The Toilers were formed in 1910 out of the old Young Men’s Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.). The late William Aldritt was the physical instructor and was instrumental in the formation of the Toilers basketball team. In the early part of the century, basketball grew in popularity in the Y.M.C.A. and church circles but held little interest compared to hockey, baseball, and lacrosse. Aldritt eventually aroused enough interest to form a league with several church groups.

In 1926, the Toilers faced the Morgan Bible Class for the Crowe Trophy which was emblematic of the city championship. The Toilers’ 50-26 victory brought them the trophy for the fifth consecutive year and thus qualified them for the Dominion playdowns. After a sweep of Regina, the Toilers met the New Westminster Adanacs of British Columbia in the Western Canadian basketball finals. New Westminster was heavily favoured to triumph in the two game, total point series as they held a distinguished record of losing only four games in the previous five seasons. However, the Toilers handily defeated them by a score of 31-19 in the first game and the following day closed the series with the Adanacs with a 24-20 victory.

The Toilers then travelled to Montreal where they faced the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association Whalers. Despite being rated as the underdogs, the Toilers defeated Montreal in the first game by a score of 27-22. Entering the second game with a five point advantage, the Toilers added ten more in a 30-20 win and took the round 57-42. The Toilers returned to Winnipeg with the Montreal Cup which signified them as the Dominion champions.

The members of the 1926 Winnipeg Toilers were: Waddy Ferguson, Bill Thorogood, Gordon Cumming, George Wilson (Captain), Al Silverthorne, Henry Schendel, Lynn Sinclair, Jimmy Clifford, and Archie Ferguson (Coach).
