Judy Moss
Athlete/Diving
Inducted 1980
Judy Moss - Athlete/Diving Inducted 1980As an eight-year-old, Judy Moss's first experience with diving came off the dock at the family's cottage in the Lake of the Woods. Her formal education at Rupertsland College on Carlton Street and the University of Manitoba was supplemented by diving instruction from Arthur Harvey of the Winter Club. The latter assisted Moss in winning several provincial junior championships.

In 1932, Moss won both the Winter Club and Provincial Springboard championships. Under her new coach Holger Henzen and an extensive training regimen, Moss then captured her first Canadian championship in Springboard in 1934.

The trials for the 1934 British Empire Games were held in Hamilton where Moss experienced difficulties, placing fourth and missing a spot on the team. Concerned members of the Winter Club rallied to raise the three hundred dollars necessary for her inclusion on the Canadian team.

The young eighteen-year-old surprised the nation, but not her Winnipeg supporters, by winning the Gold Medal in the Three Metre Springboard competition as she finished ahead of her Canadian team mates and divers from ten other nations.

A tumultuous welcome awaited Moss in places such as Toronto and Kenora as the train brought her to Winnipeg. Greeted by dignitaries and thousands of Winnipeggers, Moss was kept busy by numerous exhibitions and social functions as a result of her remarkable triumph. Moss retired from active competition following the 1935 Canadian Finals.
